festivalu?
turné, asi devět koncertů a pár dalších festivalů.
basu dneska a včera.
Už nějakou dobu s námi spolupracuje a pomáhá nám.
Chtěl jsem se zeptat na
Macabre Minstrels. Jak často s tímhle projektem hrajete živě?
Nikdy.
Jenom tady?
Už jsme to tady jednou hráli
a odehráli takhle pár koncertů, ale ne moc. S Macabre Minstrels jsme možná zahráli
pět nebo šest koncertů, to je všechno. Někdy jsme to přidali doprostřed našeho
trochu improvizoval a používal trsátko i prsty.
Kdy se ti to stalo?
Asi před šesti měsíci.
Ale znělo to dobře!
Díky, díky.
Kdy jste naposled hráli jako
Macabre Minstrels, když nepočítáme tohle?
Nevím, nemůžu si vzpomenout.
Už je to strašně dávno. Jsou to roky, kámo. Spousta let.
Jak vlastně vznikl ten nápad
dělat v podstatě takové… řekl bych táborákové písničky, u kterých se dá trochu
pohupovat do rytmu?
Víš, já vlastně nevím. Je to
dobrá otázka. Myslím, že to vzniklo z naší Disney desky. Byla
na ní The Cat Came Back, ta
písnička, co jsme hráli. Byla tam taky Found
a Peanut. Tím to vlastně nějak začalo. Řekli jsme si: „Hele, mohli
bychom hrát The Cat Came Back.“ Pak jsme začali psát
nějaké minstrelovské písničky o vrazích, třeba o Albertu Fishovi a tak. Takže
to vlastně celé začalo tou Disney deskou. Přišlo nám to docela cool a pak jsme
Tentokrát jste hráli i s
řekl, dobře, uděláme to trochu živější a přidáme basu a nějaké bicí. Ne moc
šílené bicí, něco, co to trochu nakopne. Na těchhle festivalech je taky těžké
vylézt na
pódium a hrát pomalé, klidné brnkání. Špatně se člověk slyší. Takže jsme
hráli i Mary Bell, ale přitvrdili
jsme a přidali bicí. Tady jsme to prostě museli udělat takhle.
Dobře. Co vaše přezdívky v
kapele? Jak jste na ně přišli? Třeba Corporate Death – je to nějaká narážka?
No, Dennis je prostě
přezdívka už od dětství, říkali mu: „Ty jseš fakt Dennis the Menace.“ A basák
pracoval v Rock & Roll McDonald's. Léta jsem tam dělal generálního manažera.
A MDC měli písničku Corporate
Deathburger, která byla o McDonaldu. Tak jsem si řekl, že si budu si
říkat Corporate Death, podle písničky od MDC - Corporate Deathburger. Takže takhle vznikla ta jména.
Haha, to je fakt dobrý.
Nechtěli jsme na to používat
svoje normální jména. Prostě nám přišlo vtipnější a zajímavější používat
s Johnem Waynem Gacym.
Má takovou vlastní internetovou záležitost a sbírá tam
A začal mi jednou týdně
volat.
tam s Gacym v místnosti třeba pět hodin a povídali jsme si. S jinými vrahy
bych to znovu nedělal.
to někdo z jiného státu. Navíc rád lidem psal a byl dost společenský typ, ten
Gacy.
mu napsal. Jo, mohl jsi udělat to samé, pokud jsi tehdy byl dost starý, což jsi
nejspíš ještě nebyl ani na světě…
Jo, to asi ne!
Myslím, že tohle bylo v roce
hodin.
Jo, asi jsi to prostě zkusil
a vyšlo to.
Jo.
Dobře, myslím, že to je pro
tenhle rozhovor všechno. Díky moc, že sis udělal čas.
Dobře, díky, kámo!

CORPORATE DEATH from MACABRE – I went to
Jeffrey Dahmer’s trial and visited J. W. Gacy in prison
This year, at Obscene Extreme festival in
Trutnov, Czech Republic, Macabre played two sets, celebrating 41 years of the
band’s existence. The Friday set was in their classical metallic style that
authentically mixes death metal with a certain grotesque atmosphere and
swinging rhythms into something they call „Murder Metal“, which aligns with
their lyrical themes. The second set, under the name Macabre Minstrels,
contained calmer campfire songs. What has led them to divide their material
like that?
This and more in a little interview that took
placeafter Saturday’s set with lead singer and guitarist Corporate Death.
How are you feeling after two shows at this
festival?
I feel pretty good. It takes us a few shows to get warmed
up, and so the more shows we do, the the better it gets, you know? We get
better every night. After like four or five shows, we're in a pretty good
groove, but first ones are always a little bit rough.
So this is not a tour at all? You just flew
in for two shows at this festival?
No, no, we're doing like a short one, like nine shows,
couple other festivals. There's one in Denmark and one in Germany, Poland,
Holland, Berlin… Pretty short, but last year we did a couple weeks. It's hard
for us to get away like for any tours right now, but it's nice to come out for
short little bursts like this.
I noticed you have a like different bass
player than you did last time...
Yeah, the other bass player... his mom is very old, and
he can't leave her away for too long. So, he still does shows with us, we're
still a band, but he just couldn't do this tour. He lives in North Carolina,
which is an 11-hour drive. So before he comes out, we practice with the guy
that played bass tonight and yesterday, he's a friend of mine that has jammed
with us for years. He knows the songs, so instead of just drums and guitar at
practice, he gets in there and plays the bass parts. So he's worked with us for
some years, helping us out.
I wanted to ask about Macabre Minstrels, how
often do you do live shows with those?
Never.
Only here?
We did it once here before, and we've done a few shows
with it. Not much, though. We've maybe played five or six shows with Macabre
Minstrels, that's it. Sometimes we did it in the middle of one of our sets,
like Macabre set, took a break, and did Macabre Minstrels, and then more heavy
stuff. So we've done it a few different ways. But it's not something we do very
much. And I messed my thumb up. I tore a ligament in here, so it's hard for me
to fingerpick now. So I kind of improvised tonight using pick and fingers and
stuff. I would have probably done more mellow fingerpicking stuff tonight, but
you see my thumb, it doesn't open. That's as far as I can open it.
When did that happen?
It happened about 6 months ago.
It sounded good, though!
Oh, thanks. Thanks.
When's the last time you played as Macabre
Minstrels, like except for this one?
I don't know, I can't remember. So long ago. It's been
years, man. Many years.
How did the idea start to make basically, I
would say, maybe campfire songs to groove to a lil bit...
You know, I don't know, it's a good question. Actually, I
think it came from this Disney record we had. It had The Cat Came Back
on there, the song we played. It had Found a Peanut. That kind of got us
started. Like, "Oh, we could play that Cat Came Back." And
then from there, we started writing some killer like Minstrel songs, guys like
Albert Fish and stuff. So it just kind of started from that Disney album. We
thought it was kind of cool, and then we just said, "Hey, let's do a
Macabre Minstrels, some clean vocals and stuff." It's nothing we ever
planned, it just kind of happened, you know?
I noticed this time you played with drums as
Minstrels. I think last time at this festival, it was just like without them?
Yeah, it was just two guitars last time. But, you know,
like I said, my fingerpicking is kind of—I can't really do it now until I get
surgery on this thumb or something. I just figured, okay, we'll make it a
little more lively and throw bass on there and some drums. Not too crazy on the
drums, something that picks it up a little bit more. It's hard at these
festivals, too, to get out there and play slow, mellow fingerpicking stuff.
It's hard to hear it and everything. So we did Mary Bell, but we made it
more heavy with some drums in there. So this is just how we had to do it for
this one.
Okay. So what about your nicknames in the
band? How did you pick them? Like Corporate Death, is it a reference?
Well, Dennis is just always kind of that—he's always been
a menace, you know? It was just his nickname when he was a kid, like, "Ah,
you're Dennis the Menace." And and then the bass player (Nefarious) just
thought of his. He's just like, "Yeah, I want to call myself this."
It's just kind of humorous, like we heard some other bands doing it, you know,
like Venom or whatever, using stage names and stuff. So mine was—I worked at
Rock & Roll McDonald's. I was a general manager there for years. And there
was a song by MDC called Corporate Deathburger, it was about McDonald's.
So I go, "Okay, I'll just call myself Corporate Death," but it's
actually from a song by MDC called Corporate Deathburger. So that's
where the names came from.
Haha, that's really cool.
We didn't really want to use our regular names on it, we
just thought it'd be more funny and more interesting to use stage names.
Okay, last question. If it's not a taboo or
something, I did notice on the internet that you had some photos with John
Wayne Gacy. Have you been like pen pals before for a long time?
Yeah, I was getting paintings from him, and you had to do
it through the mail. My friend started doing it, and I'm like, "Okay, I
want to get some paintings, too." So I started writing him, and he started
corresponding with me. Then my friend went and met him. This guy, he contacts a
lot of serial killers, like a hundred of them. And he goes and meets guys, and
he gets artwork, and he sells the stuff. He's got his own, like, murder
collectibles internet thing. And he went and met Gacy, and he had photos with
him. I'm like, "I want to do that, I want to go meet Gacy." He's
like, "Yeah, just write him and ask him." So I wrote him, and Gacy
said, "Yeah, okay." He's like, "Give me your phone number and
stuff," and he started calling me once a week. So he was calling me once a
week on the phone. So we got to go into a prison, I went and met him like three
times, and actually got some paintings when I went there with him, but you're
in a room like, you know, 5 hours with Gacy and just talking, you know? I
wouldn't do it again with other killers. It was just this guy was like a 5-hour
drive from my house, so it wasn't like some guy in another state. And this guy
liked to write people and he was a pretty outgoing character, Gacy. So I'm just
like, "Okay, this is cool, you know?" So it's a once-in-a-lifetime
opportunity to do something like that.
Right. It was basically through a friend,
like if somebody else wanted to do that, it wouldn't be that easy?
No, no, it was... I was writing Gacy already, getting
paintings through the mail. I just wrote to him and said I'm interested in
buying some paintings. He was making them for anyone. Anyone who wrote him. Yeah,
you could have done the same if you were old enough at the time, which you
probably weren't born yet…
Yeah, probably!
This was like '93 I went and met him. And I went to the
Dahmer trial, which, was cool, too, but when you get the chance to do something
like that, like "Okay, I'm going one day to the Dahmer trial." I
couldn't turn it down, you know? But like I said, I wouldn't try to go meet a
bunch of killers and write different guys and stuff. It's just like these guys
were close by, Milwaukee to go see Dahmer, it's only 2.5 hour drive, and Gacy 5
hours.
I guess you just shot your shot and it worked
out.
Yeah.
Okay, I think that's it for this interview.
Thank you very much for taking your time.
Okay, thank you, man!
