A Perfect Absolution

GOROD - A Perfect Absolution

Thanks to their composer skills Gorod have lead death metal to absolute perfection. They do not seek to be "pioneers", they simply work with the well-known techniques. However their methods are simply delicious for your ears. Superb and easy to remember themes, creative rhytmics and vocals that supports the music.

GorodFilipismo: One can simply rely on these French guys. Since their debut album Neurotripsicks (2005) they have brought almost orgasms to technic death metal fans with every new load of songs. I must admit, biased maybe, that there is no weak part in their discography at all – the more delighted I am with their new album. The band has masterfully avoided all the clichés and they have brought us an exclusive dish on a tray. However beforehand nothing could make us believe that we would witness a masterpiece. What's more, with the band leader Guillaume Martinot's departure from the band (he was with GOROD with their first three albums) the metal public may have begun to worry about this promising bunch's fate.

GorodHowever Julien "Nutz" Deyres (known by the Czech audience more as the ZUBROWSKA singer) took charge more than skilfully. The result is this year's album A Perfect Absolution. After the great EP Transcendence (2011) this is his first full impact. GOROD play with melodies more than PSYCROPTIC do (the band which is so popular in the Czech Republic, mainly thanks to Šimeček's alternations). Gorod have lead death metal to absolute perfection. You won't be bored with never-ending hard stuff nor devastated by endless combinations of "curls". Their style is arranged in layers so that they atract your attention during the whole album. And there is even something more. You shall be given a 39 minute lecture on modern death metal. GOROD even enhances it with another influences without losing the grip and harming the style. They do not seek to be „pioneers“, they simply work with the well-known techniques. However their methods are so delicious for your ears that you'd be crazy not to want their records.

A Perfect Absolution is an equation of the band and Julien Deyres. His approach is somewhat different than it used to be in the band, certainly. Martinot used to be "above" the whole band, but now the times are changing. In my opinion, this Deyres' "equality" with the band is definitely for the better. Deyres becomes a part of GOROD without standing high above the band or fading in their music. He is a part of a well-kept machine tuned to perfection. The result is stunning. The rollercoaster ride starts with the first Birds of Sulphur. Those who have seen this band live may agree that this is no studio-nourished offspring. What you hear on this record you get (precise and thrilling) live.

GorodThe main asset of the (again) perfect grafical design of the record is that it is aiming to bring death metal to broad public. They do not pander to you though. It is a gentle story of five musicians, who have come, seen and won. Literally. What else could explain e. g. the Varangian Paradise? This is where GOROD start their academy of technical death metal without omitting some important stuff or offending anyone. They play riffs one after the other knowing their strenghts. This is the case of the whole stuff on their new record. Sometimes they alow themselves to be inspired (technically) by CYNIC, somewhere else they are inspired by the best (heavy stuff) of SUFFOCATION. All of these put together form a complex which is by no means an ode to metal.

Having mentioned the "first class stunner" Varangian Paradise I mustn't forget the second jewel of the record, which is The Axe of God. The combination of those above mentioned aspects (hard stuff vs. melodies) is unheard of. In the way only THEM can provide.

And the rest of A Perfect Absolution? Six songs, each of them good enough to be placed in the textbook of technical death metal. Expect nothing less. My fear for the future of GOROD evaporated. This is one of the few bands that aspire (and should be getting used to) to be a cult. And if not I shall have to eat the hat of Julien's :)

bizzaro: Having recently seen the band live in Prague I had to reassess my view on the new record and the recent work of these French guys. The second time in a row they have performed absolutely faultlessly. I assessed them with not exactly pleasant words. However I'm eating those words now and finally I have to praise "A Perfect Absolution". Well, not exactly praise but appreciate their work at least.

With the new drummer, Samuel Santiago, the band got what it had needed. He is an accomplished, heated rhythmic magician who is able to capture the right moments and support the Gorod-specific melodic finesses. The problem with the former rocord Process of a New Decline was the uniformity of the drums. Otherwise the music of Gorod hasn't changed much, it is still based on strong foundations, there is no lack of melodies, they aren't obtrusive and over-done, even though there are many melodic„curls“. However these aren't distracting for they are balanced with a rhytmic structure and all the riffs. As far as their genre is concerned their music is modern, they use multiple techniques (how could they not – the Gorod guitarists are true virtuosos) and underlying loops (Carved in the Wind). They aren't afraid of well-defined and solidly based riffs. That's why I mentioned above that they are still standing on solid foundations. Because of this I see similarities with Martyr (5000 at the Funeral) (not only because of the old-school style – e.g. Cerebrum)

Where lies the main power of Gorod? Firstly it is the „novice“ Julien who performs in an excellent form with several kinds of vocals without distracting you from the rest, he skilfully captures the mood of tracks. Secondly it is the branched guitar motives and utterly unique skill of the guitar players to use the preceding motives and lead them further.

This is the greatest power of Gorod. You keep bumping at preceding guitar motives you heard a while ago. Their skills to return to what has already been played is unheard of and they fluently pick up the threads and follow the other motives, even though they may be of a different genre.

You will find no brutality here (at this point I have to disagree with the former review – the mention of Suffocation), however you shall be surprised by their composer skills, great and easy to remember melodies, fantastic solos, creative rhythmics and vocals that are able to support the music. All gift-wrapped in non-sterile sound. My apologies, Gorod, A Perfect Absolution provided me with a perfect absolution.

Gorod - Samuel SantiagoS příchodem stávajícího bicmana kapela určitě dostala to, co potřebovala. Schopného, úderného rytmika, který umí vystihnout moment a podpořit melodickou finesu, kterých je hudba Gorod plná. Jenže zakopaný pes na předchozí desce Process of a New Decline tak trošku spočíval v mírné jednolitosti bicích. Z tohoto důvodu – ne vyloženě oldschoolovosti jako třeba u Cerebrum – zde třeba nacházím i podobnosti s Martyr (5000 at the Funeral).

Nehledejte zde brutalitu (to bych předchozí recenzi - zmínku Suffocation - vytkl), jen skladatelský kumšt, skvělé a zapamatovatelné linky, fantastická sóla, nápaditou rytmiku a vokál, co umí podpořit muziku. Zabaleno v nesterilní zvuk. Omlouvám se Vám, Gorod, A Perfect Absolution mi dala „rozhřešení“.
