Evolution Through Revolution

BRUTAL TRUTH - Evolution Through Revolution

Realita.

Ano, poslech Revolution není žádný med, z desky leze smrad nepříčetnosti, pomatenosti, snad i duševní choroby léčené kilogramy trávy. Co třeba taková On the Hunt? Psycho!

Well, it’s here. The hippies from the eastern coast of USA came back a couple years ago and their goal was to make people happy with their aggressive blast again. Grindcore in their presentation always sounded differently and distinguished itself from their genre mates. Always unkempt, strangely disharmonic, mentally hysteric, stoned. Such adjectives has inherently belonged to their production since their inception and it would be utopia to think this time it will be different. For sure, twelve years have passed and it is a long time, but almost all the concerned musicians played in some band (in particular, ‚Lilker the musicholic‘ at that time hanged around almost every rehearsal room in Yersey), so the fear the band wouldn’t handle the instruments was out of place. And there has always been a lot of inspiration. For a genesis of the new grindotheques it has always been sufficient to roll a joint.

Evolution Through Revolution consists of twenty songs whose description is easy to label as: THE ABSENCE OF ANY RELAX. Really, this record is so intensive massacre from the beginning to its end that the first listenings you undertake bear itself in the way „I can’t stand this aggression anymore“. But the whole album is by no means an unceasing blastbeat that today‘s bands tend to and whose productions are many times a senseless thrashing. Brutal Truth’s sound is much more variable. The blastbeats varies with the rock riffs and its paces that are supplied with their renowned rhythmically tangled beats. To see BT with purely grindcore glasses would be a great mistake; their advantage is to create own extreme universe in which coexists psychedelic noise (listen to Semi-Automatic Carnation), stoner rock, raw black metal (always influential Dark Throne), HC/punk (the great coversong Dylan Wrote Propaganda Songs), someone will hear the musical influences of the the sixties/seventies break - acidrock or Jimi Hendrix. Etc. Thus no languid, forget any music scores from the academies, this is the music of the streets on which the sewer rats run and the homelesses beg. Reality.

Yes, the reception of Revolution is no comfort at all, from this album crawls out the odour of derangement, insanity and, maybe, even mental disorder cured with the kilograms of weed. Evolution is closest to Need to Control album, but the new guitarist with an accordingly deviant style, Erik Burke, draws his band near to the today’s production of the extreme bands that begun on BT. However, listen to this album again and properly – you will find out that the songs behave incalulable, the harebrained and the strangely rough grind blasts change with a guitar quack, a stoned quotation of Motörhead and a swinging oldschool metal turns to a psychopatic storm again. This band isn’t sane! How about such a On the Hunt? Psycho! A tangled grindcore suddenly replaces Lilker’s hallucinogenic bass guitar (cutting the heads with its inhuman booster all along), at once we find ourselves in Woodstock, but here comes a blast abruptly again with (perhaps) a saxophone’s solo in the way of John Zorn. The record dashed crazily all along until the twelfth on the list, Detached. However, this is not a lunch break, Kevin constantly yells and this is only the first half! Endure!

The only thing that degrades the whole album is a production which could be more cohesive and metallic. This is reflected on the drums‘ sound of ‚genius dilettante‘ Richard Hoak who - in a contention with such aces as Roddy or Kollias - would make himself ridiculous, however, without him it should not be Brutal Truth in its cacophonous beauty.

So, the conclusion is therefore the iffy album where it‘s enormly important not to judge too quickly. At first, it seems it contains only insane and messy attack, then one feels disappointed the record doesn’t offer anything new, finally, under an impenetrable layer of madness a bright listener discovers a great deal of the unconventionally interconnected styles and the original moments – in the way only Brutal Truth can cope.
