BIOSPHERE - Wireless: Live at the Arnolfini, Bristol

review_1242_px4

Ve finále se tedy nakonec jedná o chytře udělané „the best of“. Jak a nakolik to komu postačuje, ponechávám otevřené.

Since this May the seventh Biosphere’s album is available. It seems this time as if Geir Jenssen wanted to recapitulate, but he didn’t choose the way of releasing an anthology. In the genre of ambient it would be weird and it wouldn’t meet any reasonable comprehension. He chose much easier alternative – the live album. Wireless is a record of the show that took place in Bristol and it originally consists of one hour long composition which was then divided into eleven parts. Well-known Chris Watson took care of the record’s sound and not less renowned BJ Nilsen provided the mastering and the other studio’s work.

The biggest pro is its sensitive dramaturgy. It would be a mistake to regard this album as a sum of the separate parts from the notorious Biosphere’s records; they are ingenuinely interconnected and confronted in one, neverending sonic mass. The album artfully moves on an imaginary sinusoid where Geir Jenssen operates with his two main inspiratory influences – the chilly and the light breeze of minimalism and the pulsing ambient techno. The songs’ choice is proportional and no record is advantaged: on Wireless you can find two pieces from the classic album Substrata as well as Shenzou and there were chosen three songs from the last record to date, Dropsonde. The decent opener Pneuma (I, II) with hosting Anders Karlskås that actually also brings the album to its end, gradually draws a listener‘s imagination into the world of everlasting snow. Just after the reading Jenssen’s report of his ascent on the Himalaya’s peak Cho Oyu (a commented photoreport you will find here), it comes to the author’s mind that Jenssen’s music would be interesting to put into some nonnarrational film set in the mountains. Sky-blue heaven, the towering ice walls and the whizzing wind all over. After all, isn’t it better to close your eyes and start off your own fantasy? Let everybody choose his own, however, some enclosed second CD would be worth considering.

The experts of Biosphere’s work soon on this live album discover that the author’s investment in the improvisation or the other sound modifications is null and the songs stay almost identical with their studio albums‘ originals. It is a pity, but on the other hand knowing Jenssen’s minimalistic approach you can anticipate this. On the Wireless album is silence as on the South Pole, you can not hear the audience’s shout or applause, all is subordinated the only goal – the creation of sonic equivalent of a place where human feet haven‘t tread. From this standpoint, the live album is a nice experience, but it is a question to ask if it is good enough to full satisfaction. The author of this text expected more than the rigorous copy of yet outstanding studio-made songs. In conclusion, expect smartly made „the best of“. If it is enough or not, I let open.
