…a osmý den Bůh poslouchal Crowbar! / …and on the eighth day God listened to Crowbar

…a osmý den Bůh poslouchal Crowbar!

Nebo poslední nápad v Moon (album Lifesblood for the Downtrodden): nejdřív drtící staccata, posléze korunující závěrečná melodie. Vynahrazuje si to SILOU.

Melodii a brutalitu objevíte i v jediném motivu, podobnou propojenost lze objevit v míšení extrémně nabroušených pasáží s Windsteinovým andělsky znějícím čistým hlasem (konec Down Into the Rotten Earth). V To Build a Mountain to do vás nejdřív brutální silou naperou, posléze elegicky rozesmutní.

Salvation
Soul searching for lost innocence
I feel it coming, coming in waves
Created my own world
The angels they carry me
It's such a long way home

Opět půjdu pro příklad k To Build a Mountain; čteme zde „Don't be the slave / Don't let your weakness show / To build a mountain takes a long, long time / Use what you've learned like a catapult / And load the cannon when you need to fire“. Ani slůvko o pokoře, návratu do ztraceného ráje. Nikoliv, zde se odehrává neustálý boj „vyhratelný“ silnou individuální vůlí lapidárně shrnutelný do přísloví „co tě nezabije, to tě posílí“ (Nietzsche). V těchto vnitřních bojích (jež prožívá každý citlivější člověk) nalezneme dílčí posuny. Na druhé desce (rok 1993) naleznete píseň Holding Nothing, o dvanáct let později se Windstein k tématu vrací v příznačně nazvané Holding Something, kde již otevřeně označuje to, co předtím nemohl pochopit ani najít: „I’ve learned to live and how to survive - undying will that keeps me alive”.

Co dává životu hodnotu, je utrpení (refrén v Suffering Brings Wisdom zní: „These things make you become a man“). Utrpením není myšleno jako něco, co má pouze negativní důsledky; utrpení znamená vůbec něco cítit, především taky pro to, aby si člověk něčeho vážil a proč pro něco věnoval tolik úsilí. Vůbec zde nejde o doommetalové pasivní lkaní, je to proces vývoje člověka. Texty nakonec zobrazují moderního člověka v modelové situaci: nemožnosti věřit v Boha a tuto nemožnost jakkoliv překonat. Takovým příkladem by mohl být nejednoznačně pochopitelný text k I Am Forever. Dovolím si ho zde předložit celý: „Beaten man / Blinded fool / Wash it all / Wash it all / Wash it all away // In the dirt / In my filth / Smothering / Smothering / Took it all from me // The tortured earth I tread / Forever all I dread / The burning in my head / I am forever // Hand that bleed / Dying need / Pushing me / Pulling me / Taking all I had”.

Nepředstavuje nějaké povýšené mentorování či kazatelský přístup k člověku, naopak umožňuje to všechno prožít spolu s tvůrcem. Tohle odhalení vlastní slabosti v době přemrštěných gest, vágních póz a nesmyslného zrychlování tempa života, kdy se člověk ani k zastavení a přemítání o sobě nedostane, oceňuji.

To by místo prvotních prožitků mozek analyzoval data (například jedničky a nuly) a až poté by k nim přisuzoval jednotlivé emoce. Proč to píšu…

…and on the eighth day God listened to Crowbar

It´s easy to say: write something about Crowbar. I’ve been getting to it for a while, but so far my plans have been thwarted by a demon trying to persuade me it’s no use. The thing is: for me Crowbar feels as if a close person started a sentence and I finished it without changing the original meaning. It´s called consonancy. Two souls talking without a word spoken aloud. I shan´t give a detailed description of the band’s history and staff appointments here, in short I want to dismiss every information redundant to the listening to the music (although those who know the band better see that even this resonates between the lines). On the contrary – I want to focus on the most important thing, which is music.

Who cares about pigeonholes of music

As you may have read somewhere else, Crowbar play sludge, doom, hardcore, sometimes you can find stuff about doomcore. The conventional pigeonholes are sure to nick the individuality of music presentation in the bud. Is this the case of Crowbar? Of course it is. The whole band, now just Kirk Windstein by himself, stare into the past, where they can hear the classical metal (Iron Maiden), which used to represent the heaviest thing anyone could imagine. In his (i. e. Kirk’s) mental images we definitely find Led Zeppelin, who wrote the most powerful rock pieces of all – millions of souls from all over the world were literary breastfed with their ballads. LZ represent naturalness, juiciness, a devastating hurricane of emotions. And then there are the mysterious boys in the back, hooded figures in black, Black Sabbath. Darkness, bleakness, unbelievably pure rolling power of their guitar riff.

The aforementioned part of Crowbar isn’t inspired by the classical rock motto “sex, drugs and rock’n’roll”, which sort of preserved hedonistic orgy, romantic dreaming about the future, living here and now, basking in glory as long as possible for the whole upcoming century. All of this got sour and leaden in the maw of Crowbar. How come? Let their remakes testify. Be it Iron Maiden (Remember Tomorrow), Led Zeppelin (No Quarter) or Gary Wright (Dream Weaver) transformed beyond recognition, all the tracks are infected with an unbearable grief. This is their homeland where it’s definitely not easy to live.

Sludge, they say. Educated listeners know its bases by heart – Neurosis, Isis, Cult Of Luna etc… But Crowbar? Yes, they have everything – the sadness, the rolling power, the slow crushing mechanism of internal pain devouring a man from within – but it all sounds somehow DIFFERENT. A fan of the genre will lay their record confusedly aside and s/he may not get round to it again; and when the band is mentioned s/he will retort with something like “it’s a sort of commercial hardcore, you know.” Crowbar are unique because they melted both genres in one pot, where they happily coexist. It’s too sludge for a die-hard headbanger and too much metal for a convinced emo fan. How to separate these sources, how to know what’s what… Is it necessary to know the seventies, to listen to basic, crucial records, dig around it etc.? I don’t know. Let’s go back, shall we?

You have to slow down to listen to their music, to concentrate on every tone, because it is there where the story goes. Let us get closer to their realm. The opening monstrous riff in To Build a Mountain (record Sonic Excess in Its Purest Form) is a proof that there’s much more behind the facade of simplicity. Downbeats are drummed with a paragon pattern of boom-bang yet the guitars don’t meet the drums in the „quarters“ even once! The tones swing from side to side, sway quakily emphasizing singular moments; staccato three times, legato twice, five single tones and that’s it. Or the last idea in Moon (album Lifesblood for the Downtrodden): crushing staccatos first crowned by the final melody. Riff par excellence. These hard rides are counterpart of contemporary deathcore though, which often accentuates the downbeats. In To Build a Mountain Kirk’s phrased yell starting one eighth later in every verse of a strophe makes it rhythmically unseizable. It’s a clash of two worlds (riff versus vocals), which on the one hand fight for dominance and on the other hand complement one another and deepen the final feeling. Again – the extreme emphasis on every building block of the monolith makes the power of the song. After all the rock history proves that musical notations of the most ingenious pieces look like a child drawing; when you hear them though, you won’t get them out of your head (Rolling Stones – Satisfaction, Led Zeppelin – Whole Lotta Love, Jimi Hendrix – Fire). One gets the impression that the purposed simplicity may not be that simple at all. Windstein is very underrated riffmaster who is overshon by otherwise affiliate Dimebag Darell. Darell impressed (and his records still do) with his virtuose finesse, which wasn’t just a simple exhibition – on the contrary, its frenzy spread filthy aggression on all sides. Kirk is Dimebag one hundred kilos heavier. The hell he put on weight, he can’t run up the stairs and freak around. He makes up for it with sheer power.

Crowbar were popular especially in the first half of the nineties, they sounded more hardcore then, more cutting, sharper, they were easier to classify into existing pigeonholes. As years pass by the music pigeonholes somehow won’t fit and a listener has to ask looking backward: Was their music that downright or was I just heedless to details? At the end of the twentieth century the southerners got out of sight of the media, they nevertheless produced excellent records and kept their rather small yet stable group of core fans. Let’s put it this way: Crowbar don’t have any downright poor song for each one has certain points that pave their own way through other bands’ production. It’s crucial for the band that when they start playing, you know it’s them. Their typical utterly impervious sound that won’t let a pin fall, with bass sounding like a thousand bells of angelic chorals (allusion comprehensible when you’ve read this article), was brought to perfection on Broken Glass. It’s pleasant that all their albums sound a bit different, sametimes with more reverberation (so that it gets better atmosphere), sometimes somewhat crude (so that it makes the impression of rawness or the feeling of antiquity); they never get stuck in one place.

Celestial steamroller

What makes Crowbar Crowbar is the impossibility of classification and definition of their single ideas. To be specific: it could be HC, it’s hard enough, but there is a lack of cavorting rhythms and sharp cut riffs; it’s too concrete for muddy sludge, too sharp, too little abstract. You will of course find exceptions, nevertheless you’re always left with specific undertuning which is unseparable from a sort of pillowy frothiness (terminus technicus). Strings that have been struck vibrate strangely as if the guitarist used steel slides. Their riffs are extremely heavy though somehow floating and light at the same time. We are being dragged to the ground though lifted up to heavens. Introduction to Odd Fellows Rest is a melody of this kind, which could be easily described as „¬…and he saw the light“. I consider Crowbar to represent a man’s life with all of its unsurmountable contradictions made music. A man trying to overcome everything that belongs to a human keeps being thrown back down to earth. And this process of getting up the ground and falling down again keeps repeating until the day you die.

A similar discrepancy can be observed on many levels. Let us start ascending from details to the album as a whole. A melody and brutality can be found in one motive at the same time and a similar connection is represented by extremely sharp parts with Windstein’s angelic voice singing the lyrics (the end of Down Into the Rotten Earth). On the level of whole songs there can also be found something that could be described as a symbiosis of stress and relief, tranquility and thunderstorm. In To Build a Mountain you get blasted off your chair with a brutal force of the piece only to be moved by elegiac sadness afterwards. On the level of the album concept there are melodic tracks regularly followed by riff annihilations (which is the case of Sonic Excess in Its Purest Form, where every odd one is more harmonic than any even one, which are sadistically sharp); during Time Heals Nothing (what a title!) or Equilibrium a listener gets the biggest extremes – from ultramelodic refrains to brutal avalanche of HC kicks, which make a US Moshpit a simple syllabary for snotty kids with gel in their hair. The exception to all the rules and boundaries is Broken Glass; there is no such thing as relief; it’s fight for your life as you’re slowly getting suffocated in an avalanche of riffs.

Vocals. Kirk Windstein has a voice that can’t be matched. You would have to have your vocal chords surgically loosened then drink two tons of Jack Daniel’s and spend ten years shouting at military parade grounds. His vocals are unique in all the respects and it’s him who bears 50 percent of the songs’ emotions. It’s universal in the way that it doesn’t avoid any „forbidden“ registers. It often substitutes the brutality of the guitars and thus becomes another amplifier, sometimes it is melodiously vocal and melancholically sombre. (see a ballad To Touch the Hand of God). However mostly it is represented by intensely heart-felt singing-yelling, intensity of which could be measured in meganewtons. It is not possible to describe, all the comparisons necessarily fail.

No, I haven´t picked any medieval monk’s mass-book. I’m just trying to prove that Crowbar music and lyrics are reflections of the same thing. Their life credo is atheistic existencialism; a man is doomed to live, there are typical motives of walls (Empty Room) and of the impossibility to overcome various obstacles. The thing about God is not clear though, in spite of the obvious christian symbols. There are Windstein’s frequent hints about transcendency, nonetheless there are no higher authorities that would ensure a possibility of salvation. Quite often it’s the other way round. As an example I choose from To Build a Mountain; where there is „Don’t be the slave / Don’t let your weakness show / To build a mountain takes a long, long time / Use what you’ve learned like a catapult / And load the cannon when you need to fire“. Not a word about humbleness, about a return to the lost eden. Not at all – it represents the continuing fight that could be won with strong will of an individual, the fight that could be succintly described with a proverb What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger (Nietzsche). In these internal fights that every sensitive man knows there is a certain tendency. On the second album (from 1993) there is a song called Holding Nothing. Windstein returns to this theme twelve years later in a song with an obvious title Holding Something, where he openly identifies what he could neither understand nor find before “I’ve learned to live and how to survive – undying will that keeps me alive”. The religious optimism can’t be found in other albums either though. For example the symbol in a booklet of Broken Glass is obvious; the broken glass is a shattered window in a cathedral…

Lyrics of Crowbar reflect a twentieth century man’s educated opinion on the role of a religion in society, and it is obvious that the man doesn’t want to get stuck with a christian discursus again. We needn’t go too far for interpretations, for example Milan Machovec describes a prayer as a possibility and a process of selfrealization of a man. Suffering is what makes life worth (refrain in Suffering Brings Wisdom is: “These things make you become a man”). Suffering isn’t just something with negative results: suffering means to feel something at all, mainly so that a man could value something he worked so hard on. It’s not passive doommetal moaning at all, it’s a process of man development. After all the lyrics represent a modern man in a model situation: it is impossible to believe in God and to anyhow overcome this impossibility. An example of this could be ambiguous lyrics of I Am Forever. Let me quote it here: “Beaten man / Blinded fool / Wash it all / Wash it all / Wash it all away // In the dirt / In my filth / Smothering / Smothering / Took it all from me // The tortured earth I tread / Forever all I dread / The burning in my head / I am forever // Hand that bleed / Dying need / Pushing me / Pulling me / Taking all I had”. To understand the context it is necessary to listen to the whole song, the final repeated FOREVER cried as if from a distance is almost creepy.

The most important thing is the fact that you can feel all of this from the music. What the author values most is that you can see HUMANITY in all of its (mainly negative) aspects despite severity of the expression. It’s not in a form of patronising lectures or sermonic approach to a man, on the contrary it makes the listener experience all this together with the author. I do appreciate this revelation of one’s weaknesses in the age of affected gestures, vague poses and pointless increasing of tempo of life, in the age when people don’t even get to slow down and ponder about themselves.

Conclusion

In the end I would like to mention one more thing that applies for the art in general. In the last few years I’ve been confronted with opinions that I only analyze music, I „count“ it, that I can’t feel it. These objections are noted nevertheless they’re utterly wrong. Music – as well as any form of art – is only possible to perceive with human senses, reason – which controls, filters and justifies – comes afterwards. It’s hard to imagine this being the other way round. That would mean that instead of primary impulses a brain analyzes data (like ones and zeroes) and only after this matches them to emotions. Why am I writing this… This text is no statistical analysis, on the contrary, it is a reflection of emotions coming from listening to Crowbar.

This relates to a lack of understanding I’m confronted with every day. I often read and hear “I don’t understand it” or “I don’t get it”, even from my close friends. You can understand science which brings facts and empirically verifiable results. It is a result of pragmatic lifestyle when to understand means to use purposefully, to exploit. There is no concrete answer though, there even can’t be one. Having analysed Crowbar music and feelings related to it doesn’t mean I formulated anything “final”, some incontrovertible truth. The road is – and always has been –open.

Finally I’d like to point out this: Crowbar production is a sort of rock music tradition unifier. It connects the past and the present having added something from itself which actually makes it future. At the same time it’s not reactionary, it doesn’t squint at long lost times, it doesn’t tell us it “used to be better then”. Instead of that it whispers in our ears “I am, what I am; I know what I’m doing and where I belong to; I´m passing the message on”. And I’m passing the message on to you.

gába’s part: New Orleans Crowbar, the masters of oppressively slow tempos and murderously undertuned sound celebrate no less than their twentieth anniversary. They haven’t fit in any pigeonhole nor have they obliged to contemporary trendy music styles, they have always chosen their own paths, usually those seldom trodden by others, be it because of their incompetence or for commercial reasons. The path Crowbar chose sort of took them away from the spotlight. At the same time they inspired many other bands with their music, for example Hatebreed.

Their first album Obedience Through Suffering, which is still in the sign of the band defining their own sound and direction, was followed by succeeding albums where the initial flaws are getting fixed. These albums finally reveal some of the biggest Crowbar qualities – furious rolling power and dense sound emphasizing dragging HC parts. Their highest achievement is the Broken Glass album where their forgoing effort reaches its peak and the album is – literally cover to cover – stuffed with ultrabrutal riffs and almost unbearable agressivity. Add the indispendisable lyrics and you get the result – no stuff for those of weak nature.

Their next album Odd Fellows Rest is a turning point. Melancholy, which was only hinted on previous albums becomes the main character here, it penetrates all the ideas and riffs without falling back from the forementioned Crowbar principles though. This new style may not suit all, so this is the last album for many fans, who watch next pursuits of the band from afar whithout any emotional impacts or reflections.

Nonetheless it’s purely emotions the next albums are about. If you don’t open entirely to the music and you stay pigeonholed you have no chance at all to reveal the bases of Crowbar’s next production. Many ideas considered simple or even monotonous, with unpenetrable atmosphere of a whole album make a listener push a STOP button. As it usually is the following listening changes everything and you get deeper and deeper banishing the idea of monotony and boredom out of your head.

The band’s next achievements follow the path drawn by Odd Fellows Rest album, alhough every album and every song is entirely new, unique and irreplaceable. This is the result – as it was mentioned above – of a different sound of every record.

What’s ingenious about Crowbar is that the best ideas always arrive unlooked-for and very often in the slowest and hardest to listen parts of their songs. If it is supported by Kirk’s unmistakeble singing, one almost feels physically sick. This means that some pieces, excellent though they are, can only be listened to once in a while (this can be said about approximately 15 songs :-)). This is the only weak spot of Crowbar…

What I find impressive about Crowbar is the absolute humanity, zero percent of hypocrisy and in spite of its brutality no hint of wouldbe hardness and own exceptionality. In short of those things much too common for the contemporary world (not only) of music.
